ALCHEMICAL COWBOY

Asterione, 1978, bronzo, 74x62x8 cm

ENGLISH
We are like troglodytes, dwelling in the ruins of the preceding civilization, incapable of appreciating the sense and profound beauty. We founded our reality on rubble, transforming temples and palaces into shacks and hovels. Ancient splendors were obscured and tarnished by the lava and ashes in the cataclysmic eruption of Santorini. Theseus, by killing the Minotaur, the last Aegean sage, cut Ariadne's thread, thereby interrupting our path to ancient labyrinthine knowledge. That grand vision of the cosmos, with its masterful chiaroscuro of life and death, is lost, and with it man's potential to experience himself in relation to this cosmos. In place of this vision is a blinding, dazzling light, which seems to deny the feral side of man and death as essential elements in the picture. This unnatural light is as unnatural as the focus on the subject - so precise and cutting, that the world around fades and almost disappears. Man cuts himself out of the picture, splendid and alone. The civilization derived from this situation is not founded on the soul, nor on the cosmos to which the soul misteriously tied us. The temple, centre of the holy, although still open to the world, is not openness. Knowledge of the soul, with it's complex relationship to carnality is confined to mysteries. Reason imposes itself and it's arrogance grows. The soul is not reducible to a formula or symbol, nor can it be obliterated by thought, even less by dogma. Without the soul, poetry is impossible, the life of mankind would be stripped of a fundamental quality. That's man! This strange animal, born immature, like Dionysus, could with endless pain, through a second birth, like Dionysus, conquer maturity, and dwell poetically "in being".

Tondo, 1990-91, bronzo, 111,5x11,5 cm

Aegean culture was founded on this search. What remains of their art testifies to this. The sophisticated strategy used to reach this second birth was based on two strongholds: first "entelechia", which means how to become what you are, and, secondly to dare to be more than oneself. Entelechia was represented by the soul, Psyche or Ariadne. Dionysus represents this "becoming more than oneself". These two principles are like chariot horses, although parallel, each incites and restrains the other. Certainly some of the Greeks appear to have been aware of their importance as the Athenean propaganda suggested that Theseus not only killed Minotaur, but kidnapped Ariadne. But the soul cannot be kidnapped or tricked. The soul by her own impulse, bestows herself only after she has been conquered by a passionate heart. Apollo himself would not be able to imprison her, moreover, the bow is not suited to a prey so mobile and elusive. Dionysus, more skilled in the matter, would have certainly used a net. In any event, that harmony was lost, even though the soul, flowing like a fountain from the mysteries, irrigated Greek civilization and caused that glorious blossoming which was their Art. The water of that fountain, in more or less abundance never stopped flowing through the centuries. Only now it seems clogged with sand. A few drops remain for us and then we are the desert. Maybe we "moderns" are destined to experience death of the soul, what a disturbing prospect! I believe however that we are in a phase of maximum conceal' ment of the soul, which began with the eruption of Santorini. The consequences are evident. We find ourselves in a land which, without irrigation, has became desolate. Urged on by mirages, which I suspect emanate from the soul, we got deep into a desert in which it would not avail us even if we could transform ourselves into camels. For centuries we have been like camels, carrying a weight that does not belong to us, unconscious that the other side of the hero is the scapegoat. Somebody said "unless you first become like children you will not enter the kingdom of heaven". For myself, I found it extremely useful, although not pleasureable, to become a dried cod, as a means to re/enter into contact with the cosmos. In any case, we, who have disintegrated every faith, should now trust the unknown, and wait bravely in this latent state, without trying to force events to a conclusion. The desert which has dessicated us like dried cod, has made us more demanding and I don't believe we would now be satisfied with few sips of water. Do not hurry the conclusion, and do not try to take short cuts, which do not exist anyway in deserts. It would be a very good plan to focus on Dionysus, whose roaring animality will help us to avoid getting bogged down in abstraction and spiritualsm. The soul doesn't love dreamers. She prefers cowboys, with whom she always looks for company, beginning with that Minotaur, Asterione, with whom she formed such an interesting couple for us moderns. Interesting and truly special because those two WERE NOT GODS!

Arpista, 2007, olio su tela, 200x140 cm
Religion, in fact, did not exist then. Ariadne and her cowboy, delighted in experiencing, in an unheard of form, themselves and their relationship with the cosmos, who knows with what splendor! When they left, there was a vacuum, even if they left us with art as their gift. Art is a compass whose magnetic pole is the radiance which irradiates from "living" in a state of freedom. It doesn't matter what Plato says about art. He was forced, because of the abstract idealism of his system, to accuse art of being nothing more than delirium. Art is a really precious instrument to orient oneself towards maturity, and in itself proves that this achivement is possible. What indeed is art, if not common banal matter, transformed into poetical gold?
Certainly, this transmutation is not without risks, and the journey is long and full of snares. How fascinating for those adventurers who feel claustrophobic in the narrow but comfortable reality we have built for ourselves. Yes, our destiny calls from the unknown, and the audacious will enter deeply into the mystery of that cosmos, which is not like a frozen masterpiece of watchmaking, but the searched of an ardent heart, of a heart that matches our own. Let us be brave, because if in Santorini a cycle of evidence found its completion in "concealment", another Santorini will be the turning point towards "revelation". Revealing is the goal of this second phase. The darker the night, the brighter the morning. I believe that this dialectic, concealment/ revelation, is a mechanism with which the soul exercises her maieutic function, attracting and leading us through a series of extremely tortuous stages and passages, beyond the limitations of necessity and determinism, towards the freedom of openness, which should be a possibility in our destiny.
